Hey there, I’m Tori!

I am a 26-year-old recent graduate with a passion for travelling, crafting, and over-indulging in iced lattes. I was born and raised in the Toronto area of Canada, but thanks to the help of my amazing family and friends, I have had the opportunity to travel to some of the most amazing places around the world. I decided to create this blog as a way to continue my love for writing post-university, but more than anything, I hope for this to be a place where you can learn and grow with me as I navigate living my life as a young adult with a disability.

Keep these things in mind if you are considering cruising as a wheelchair user ⬇️⬇️⬇️

1. Cruising is by far one of the most accessible ways to travel 🛳️ It allows you to visit multiple destinations without worrying about relocating yourself (and all of your stuff/equipment) to a new hotel each time.
2. Your cruise line will often offer accessible shore excursions, but there is a huge markup on these (up to 3x the cost) Save 💲 by doing a little bit of research and book your tours directly with a local company.
3. Non-accessible staterooms have narrow doors that will NOT fit a standard size wheelchair👩‍🦼 Even if you don’t need a roll-in shower, you will need to book an accessible room.
4. RESEARCH IS KEY 🔑 If you are in a power wheelchair (and not ambulatory), you might not be able to get off the ship at tendered ports. Before booking your cruise, look at the itinerary and find one that has mostly docked ports. Similarly, make sure that the destinations have accessible transportation/shore excursions before booking.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY IN CARTAGENA, COLUMBIA! ♿️

I was really surprised by how much I was able to do in my power wheelchair in Cartagena, Columbia. Like most old and historic cities, it wasn’t perfect but I’m glad I had the opportunity to stop here for two full days with @celebritycruises 🛳️

My biggest piece of advice would be to make sure you pre-book a tour from an operator with trustworthy reviews — Celebrity didn’t have an accessible tour available for us, but we booked through @sage_traveling (on the first day) and had a fantastic experience!

First excursion off the ship with @celebritycruises was such an amazing experience! This is in no way sponsored but just wanted to say how incredible Celebrity was at arranging this tour for us. Originally they did not have accessible tours available in Costa Rica, and with no accessible taxis available either, I was worried that this would have to be a port I missed out on.

However I read about an accessible tour of the Veragua Rainforest (@veragua_rainforestcr) through Princess Cruises (shoutout to @sylvia_longmire for sharing), and when I showed it to the shore excursions team, they were so wonderful about finding the contact and adding it to their available excursions 👏🏼 It’s so refreshing to see how receptive they were to feedback about accessibility & that they truly did whatever they could to make sure I could take part in as many experiences as possible. I’m really hoping they keep this tour on their list for future passengers!

Back from my first time travelling with @celebrity

Back from my first time travelling with @celebritycruises & omg I’m so excited to share everything about my trip (lowkey this cruise line made me obsessed with cruising with how much they made accessibility a priority!) 💕

Our cruise left out of Tampa, FL and went to Grand Cayman ➡️ Panama ➡️ Costa Rica ➡️ Columbia ➡️ Mexico! I was blown away by so many of the tours that we got to do and will absolutely be sharing all the details in case it helps any one else with their accessible travel planning (because let’s be real, this information is not the easiest to find 🙄) There will be lots of content to come but for now enjoy some of the highlights!

July recap 📸

This month has been BUSY to say the least (so much so that this is the first time posting any of these pictures), but my heart is so full and happy from so many amazing memories 💕 Started the month off strong with 9 incredible days in Disney World at the CureSMA Conference. This was my first time back in 6ish(?) years and it absolutely did not disappoint. Having the opportunity to connect, learn, and simply exist with 3,500 other people who just ‘get it’ is an unmatched experience that I will never take for granted (more about this in August for #SMAAwarnessMonth - saying this here to hold myself accountable for posting 😅). I also dived into a DREAM summer job working on research surrounding disability representation in the media, started mapping some of the coolest Toronto attractions for accessibility with the one and only @accessnowapp, and had my second disability travel article published in @readersdigest. And of course soaked up the sunshine with lots of patios, backyard bbq’s, cottage lake days, and a first for me - Christmas in July 🥰 kind of bummed by how fast it flew by but i wouldn’t have wanted to spend it any other way.

Today is Rare Disease Day.

Sometimes I forget that SMA is technically a rare disease, because with social media, it really doesn’t feel that way. I have friends from across the country — even across the world — that are here to remind me that I am not alone in this journey.

On days like today where I don’t even have energy to lift a finger (never mind write anything substantial on rare disease policy in Canada), I am so thankful for my community.

Let’s make 2023 the year we stop using disability euphemisms 👏🏼

I know people are well-meaning when they use terms like “differently-abled” or “handicappable”. We are taught by society to “see the ability, not the disability” (that’s a rant for another post 🙄), so it makes sense that people use these phrases out of respect.

But here’s the thing …

DISABILITY IS NOT A BAD WORD!

Shying away from the word disabled perpetuates the idea that disability is something to be ashamed of, when it reality, it’s simply a natural human experience for 15% of our population.

I don’t know about others, but I also find these terms a little patronizing. I don’t need a sugary-sweet reminder that I can in fact do things and that I am capable in my own unique way.

At the end of the day, I am disabled, and there’s nothing wrong with that 😊

Just a few clips from 2022 💕 Looking back at where I was on this day a year ago, I can truly say I never could have imagined the growth, changes and fun I ended up experiencing.

✅ Spent 3 incredible weeks in Hawaii with the best friends I could ever ask for

✅ Filmed another amazing season of @smashingbarriers.ca

✅ Spent a week at the Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana

✅ Moved back to the city & hired a whole new care team

✅ Saw Justin Bieber, Aly & AJ and Harry Styles in concert, AND somehow managed to get in to see Taylor Swift’s premiere of All Too Well at TIFF 😳 (still in disbelief about that one honestly)

✅ Did my first commercial shoot and started working with a modelling agency

✅ Started to make money off my social media

✅ Experienced the magic of Disney World with my nephews
